50th Anniversary of Independence celebrated in London

 1stimage 50emeannivThe Embassy of Algeria initiated in collaboration with the Algerian consulate in London a series of activities and events in the framework of the 50th Anniversary of Independence.

 On the 5th July, Professor Martin Evans of the University of Portsmouth gave a lecture with debate on the Algerian people's resistance to colonization (1830-1962). The speaker highlighted the determination of Algerians to preserve their values and identity against the will of the colonial power to uproot them from their culture.

 The lecture was followed by the screening of the film “Outside the Law” by Rachid Bouchareb, which led to a rich discussion on the resistance of the people throughout the period of occupation.

 On the 7th July, a reception was held in honour of the Algerian community, marked by the speech of the Ambassador who pointed at the main stages of the resistance to occupation and the struggle for liberation, before evoking the great achievements of independent Algeria and the challenges that lie ahead.

 Hundreds of guests coming from other British cities, including families, found themselves in the large Palace Suite of the Royal Garden Hotel celebrating together in a warm atmosphere, this happy event brighten up by a chaabi band and an exhibition of paintings by the artist Houria Niati.

Last50eme anniv sportThe celebration of the 50th Independence Day also touched the sports mass in our community who was mobilized for a football tournament sponsored by Air Algerie and Algeria Press Online.

 Sixteen teams took part, from 23rd June, to playoff games culminating on June 30th with the finals and the award of cups and medals to the winners presented by the Ambassador.
