International Women’s Day /Reception in honour of the Algerian women living in the United Kingdom

542662 354487777989004 993059766 nOn the occasion of the International Women’s Day on 8th of March, H.E Amar ABBA, the Ambassador of Algeria to the United Kingdom organised a reception in honour of the Algerian women living in the United Kingdom on Saturday, 9th of March at the Embassy in London.

 In a welcoming address, Mr Amar ABBA reminded the progress made by the Algerian woman since the Independence of the country and her contribution to the nation building process. He highlighted, however, some important challenges which are still to be met.

 This initiative, first of this kind, was strongly appreciated by the guests who expressed themselves in a friendly atmosphere on their daily preoccupations whilst living abroad.

 The Algerian women living in London also underlined the urge to develop more communication spaces and to create a network in the future that would further strengthen the relationships between the members of the national community.

Visit of David Cameron in Algeria on 30th and 31st of January 2013

2013130234411253734 20Prime Minister David Cameron visited Algeria on 30th and 31st of January 2013. This is the first visit ever by a British Premier to Algeria since its independence in 1962.

During his call to Algiers, David Cameron had discussions with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal. These talks were an opportunity to review the cooperation ties between Algeria and the United Kingdom in the political, military and security, and economic and cultural fields.

David Cameron’s visit that occurred a few days after the terrorist attack on the gas plant of Tiguentourine near In Amenas in Southern Algeria is a clear indicator of friendship and solidarity of the United Kingdom towards Algeria. It represents an important step in reinforcing the relationship between the two countries which developed very positively during the last few years.

3rd – 5th December 2012/Visit to Algeria of Lord Richard Risby of Haverhill

During his visit, Lord Risby met President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Mr Abdelmalek Sellal, Prime Minister, Mr Mourad Medelci, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Youcef Yousfi, Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr Cherif Rahmani, Minister of Industry, SME’s and Promotion of Investment, Mr Abdellatif Baba Ahmed, Minister of National Education and Mr Abdelkader Messahel, Minister Delegate of Foreign Affairs for Maghrebian and African Affairs.

A Memorandum of Understanding between Algeria and the United Kingdom on the technical management of hospitals was signed between the Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform and International Hospitals Group, represented by the British Embassy. The Hassani Isaâd Hospital at Beni Messous in Algiers was chosen as the joint pilot project comprising training, management and organization.


27th – 30th November 2012 / Visit of Mr Belkacem Sahli in the United Kingdom

During his visit, Mr Belkacem Sahli met:

- Mr Jeremy Wright, Minister for Prisons and Rehabilitation at the Ministry of Justice;


- Mr Mark Harper, Minister of State for Immigration at the Home Office;

- Mr Alistair Burt, Foreign Office Minister in charge of Middle East and North Africa

Mr Belkacem Sahli also met members of the Algerian Community in Manchester and representatives of Algerian associations and civil society in London.

These meetings were the opportunity for the Secretary of State to hear about the concerns of the Algerian community living in the United Kingdom.

19th to 22nd of November 2012/Visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mourad Medelci, to the United Kingdom

8204981001 3d7037b989H.E. Mourad Medelci, Minister of Foreign Affairs made an official visit to the United Kingdom. On this occasion, he had bilateral discussions with his British counterpart, H.E William Hague and signed with him two Memoranda of Understanding on political consultations and cultural cooperation.

He also met several other British personalities including Lord Jonathan Marland, Minister of Energy and climate change and Chairman of the Business Ambassador's Group, Lord Richard Risby, the Special British representative for the economic partnership with Algeria, Mr Stephen O'Brien, MP and Special Representative of the Prime Minister for the Sahel. Mr Mourad Medelci made a presentation of the business opportunities at the HSBC headquarters.

He also met a number of Members of the British Parliament and attended the Prime Minister’s questions at the House of Commons.

During his stay, Mr Mourad Medelci officially opened the new building of the Algerian Embassy in central London.
